In the digital era, semiconductors power the rapid processing and storage of data, enabling the functioning of computers, smartphones, and other digital devices. Recognizing the strategic importance of semiconductors, the Indian government has taken several decisive steps to bolster the country’s semiconductor industry. One notable initiative is the Make in India scheme, launched in 2014 to transform India into a global manufacturing hub. Under this scheme, the government has implemented various incentives and reforms to attract investment in manufacturing sectors, including semiconductors. Additionally, the India Semiconductor Mission was launched to promote indigenous semiconductor manufacturing and design capabilities, fostering innovation and reducing dependency on imports.

The Make in India scheme has played a pivotal role in encouraging domestic and foreign investment in semiconductor manufacturing in India. By offering incentives such as tax benefits, subsidies, and streamlined regulatory procedures, the scheme has incentivized companies to establish semiconductor fabrication facilities and research centers in the country. Concurrently, the India Semiconductor Mission has focused on building a robust ecosystem for semiconductor R&D, design, and manufacturing, to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductor production.

The Government of India also started a new initiative under which SemiconIndia, an annual event of considerable importance, serves as a pivotal platform for showcasing the latest innovations, technologies, and trends in the semiconductor industry. With its diverse array of exhibitions, seminars, and workshops, the event fosters invaluable networking opportunities and facilitates knowledge exchange among industry professionals, researchers, and stakeholders, thus playing a crucial role in driving forward India’s semiconductor ecosystem and positioning the nation as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.

The Indian Government also signed a key MoU between India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and Purdue University, US, which signifies a significant collaboration aimed at enhancing capacity building, fostering research and development, and promoting industry participation in the semiconductor sector. This partnership holds the promise of driving innovation and technological advancement in India’s semiconductor industry through international cooperation and knowledge exchange.

A significant milestone in India’s semiconductor journey is the investment by Tata Electronics Private Limited, a subsidiary of the esteemed Tata Group, in semiconductor fabrication and assembly facilities across the country. In line with the Make in India initiative, Tata Electronics has committed substantial resources to establish a semiconductor fabrication facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Gujarat. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to bolster India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and contribute to the country’s technological self-reliance.

Furthermore, Tata Electronics has invested in Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat, expanding its footprint in semiconductor manufacturing and assembly. These investments underscore Tata Group’s commitment to advancing India’s semiconductor industry and aligning with the government’s vision of achieving self-reliance in critical technology sectors.

The strategic decisions taken by the Indian government, coupled with significant investments by private sector players like Tata Electronics Private Limited, are propelling India towards a future where semiconductors play a central role in driving innovation, economic growth, and societal development. As India continues to strengthen its semiconductor capabilities, it stands poised to emerge as a global leader in the digital age, shaping the trajectory of technological progress and redefining the contours of the semiconductor industry.
